Raúl Gómez, Music Director
Raúl’s passion is to inspire musicians to use their art as a vehicle to pursue excellence and spread joy. Guided by this idea, he enjoys a busy schedule as an orchestral conductor, violinist/violist, clinician and public speaker. Raúl is a regular guest with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, where he receives the unqualified support of Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto. Other conducting highlights include appearances with YOA Orchestra of the Americas (YOA), the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and multiple engagements in Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica. As a public speaker, Raúl’s TED talk “El Concierto Inolvidable” was an audience favorite at TEDxPuraVida 2014.In addition to his work with MYS, he serves as Assistant Conductor and Artistic Producer for YOA Orchestra of the Americas and conductor with the Premier Orchestral Institute. Previous posts include Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Mississippi Youth Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of Kids’ Orchestra in Baton Rouge, LA.
Raúl holds a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Kevork Mardirossian (violin) and Carlos Riazuelo (conducting). He served as a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in 2011.
Diana Scoggins, Executive Director
Diana has served as the Executive Director for MYS since 2010. Most recently prior to joining MYS, Diana was a business analyst with the Bonneville Power Administration, and has been involved with MYS as a parent for nine years (thus far!). Having played the violin with the California Youth Symphony growing up, she is passionate about music and the impact it can have in the lives of young people and the people they touch. When not hanging out at rehearsal or in concert halls, Diana loves to run, cook, read, drink coffee, and travel.
Chris Whittemore, Production Manager
Chris received his Master of Music, Clarinet Performance at University of Texas at Austin. As founder of Whittemore Studio of Music in Austin, he not only has years of experience instructing, but was responsible for creating lesson schedules each year in coordination with school administration for up to 70 students at 5 secondary school campuses. He has frequently adjudicated auditions for high school students and has taught masterclasses on college level material. Chris has an evident love of music education and kids, and strong teaching, organizational and communications skills.
Mary Overman, Development Manager
With over seven years working in nonprofit arts administration, and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Stout, Mary has always been an advocate for outreach, education, and community-building through the arts. She’s thrilled to be involved with the creative and innovative board and staff at MYS, whose hard-working and enthusiastic approach to youth education creates a welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved. In her free time, Mary loves taking her pup for long walks, lounging with her cats and a good book, hitting the local breweries with friends, rock climbing, painting, and gardening!
Anne Griffin, Office Manager
Anne Griffin has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child, Consumer & Family Studies. She spent several years working with children at risk of abuse and neglect before having the wonderful opportunity to be a “stay at home mom” with her two children. She spent the past 17 years as a Parent Volunteer in various PTA Committee Chair and Board Member Roles. Anne’s most recent volunteer roles have been with both the Metropolitan Youth Symphony as Volunteer Coordinator and Jazz Band Manager, and with the American Music Program as Band Manager and Coordinator. She has always had a passion for nonprofit programs for children and has enjoyed learning about the world of music education through her children. Anne also enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and reading a good book.
