Metropolitan Youth Symphony’s Virtual Concerts

MYS concerts for 2020-2021 season are virtual due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions.  Online concerts are FREE but require registration and will premiere on our YouTube Channel

Fall Concert 2020

November 21, 2020 @ 7pm
The online concert opens with Edvard Grieg’s lyrical Peer Gynt Suites No. 1 & 2 performed by seven MYS ensembles in a seamless flow that matches Henrik Ibsen’s original play, with added narration and visual art created by MYS students. The central portion of the concert features works by African American composers, including Florence Price’s joyful Dances in the CanebrakesDanzas de Panama by William Grant Still, Stacked by Allison Loggins-Hull and the MYS Jazz Ensemble’s performance of John Coltrane’s civil rights elegy “Alabama”.

Holiday Spectacular 2020

December 23, 2020 @ 7:00pm 
Our first-ever Holiday Spectacular Concert will celebrate holiday music from around the world, including Carol of the Bells, a jazz rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, and more! The festive evening will culminate in a virtual holiday extravaganza featuring dances from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” performed by Oregon International Ballet Academy dancers with music by MYS musicians.

Spring Concert 2021

March 13, 2021 @ 7:00pm
The MYS Spring concert will premiere on our YouTube Channel, and will feature world premiere pieces by composers from the Youth Orchestra Commissioning Initiative, which is a collaborative project with Portland Youth Philharmonic and New Jersey Youth Symphony designed to create remote performances of new works by women and composers of color. The evening includes world premiere pieces from Katie Palka, Seare Farhat, Regina Carter and Bernardo Quesada.

MYS & SYSO Present Groovebox Fantasy

April 25, 2021 @ 7:00pm
MYS was thrilled to present Groovebox Fantasy by Portland composer Kenji Bunch, a collaborative virtual performance with musicians from the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra

The project was developed to allow students to connect virtually by taking advantage of technology to bring the musicians together through joint rehearsals and a student panel led by Music Directors Raúl Gómez-Rojas and Juan Felipe Molano.

Season Finale 2021

Join us for the 2020-21 Season Finale Concert on May 29 at 7pm PST, featuring a Theme and Variations by Authentic Voice composers and selections from Bizet’s Carmen Suite.
