    New Orchestra

The MYS family is growing, and we have created a new intermediate-level orchestra, Sinfonietta Orchestra, which will be conducted by Music Director, Raúl Gómez. Ensemble description:

This full orchestra introduces young musicians to fun and challenging music at a very crucial moment in their artistic development. In addition to symphonic repertoire, selections may include music from films, video games, Broadway shows and more, which will be attractive to students from both orchestral and band backgrounds.

Students in this orchestra will work under the direction of MYS Music Director Raúl Gómez, and will polish their ensemble playing abilities, including rhythmic accuracy, tone production, balance, dynamics, blend, and most importantly: listening! Strings must perform between Baroque and Vivaldi Strings level. Woodwinds and brass must perform at or above Concert Band level. It is recommended that all players in this orchestra take private lessons.

Sinfonietta will rehearse on Saturdays from 1pm to 3pm at Roseway Heights School.  The addition of the orchestra will not impact the placement of the majority of students who auditioned in May and June.

    Percussion Ensemble & Percussion Studio

We are very excited to announce that last year’s pilot Percussion program is a permanent part of this year’s ensemble offering. MYS Director of Percussion, Michael Roberts, Oregon Symphony percussionist, oversees the program which consists of MYSticks our advanced percussion ensemble, and a Percussion Studio offered to percussion students across all MYS orchestras and bands:

    MYSticks Percussion Ensemble
MYSticks is an advanced percussion ensemble for MYS students in Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band. Under the leadership of Mr. Roberts, MYSticks explore the vast repertoire for percussion ensemble, with an emphasis on fun, challenging and engaging music by living composers. MYSticks allows our percussion students to have a very important outlet for making music front-and-center, in addition to orchestral and band repertoire. Guest artists will also work with MYSticks on a regular basis.

    MYS Percussion Studio
The Percussion Studio is offered to percussion students across all MYS orchestras and bands. This class will include technique for different orchestral percussion instruments, care and maintenance of instruments, orchestral excerpts, orchestral and band etiquette, and any other relevant topics. Michael Roberts from the Oregon Symphony will lead the Percussion Studio, with frequent appearances by guest professional percussionists from Portland and beyond. One year of experience is required and financial aid is availableClick here for more information and for the Saturday percussion schedule.

    MYSfits Artists in Residence

We are also excited to announce the creation of an Artist in Residence program for our top advanced string ensemble, MYSfits. Players in this group will work with three different world-class artists, one for each concert term. Mr. Gómez will continue to serve as Director of the group, working together with each Artist in Residence to select repertoire and coach the ensemble. The MYSfits Artist in Residence for the first term of this season is Oregon Symphony's Brian Quincey.

We enroll over 500 students from the Greater Portland Metro area and SW Washington, in 12 orchestra, band and jazz ensembles each year. MYS is one of the largest youth music organizations in the country and one of the few offering a jazz program.  MYS' strong financial aid program ensures that all interested musicians have an opportunity to join MYS.
