MYS Season Finale Concert

Join us for our end of season Finale!

The MYS Season Finale concert will premiere on May 29th at 7pm PST on our YouTube Channel.

The virtual Season Finale features two world premieres by student composers from The Authentic Voice Series, MYS’s collaboration with Fear No Music’s Young Composers Project. MYS Symphony Orchestra will perform Frazar Henry’s Epiphany, and three MYS ensembles will perform a “Theme and Variations” on Edvard Grieg’s Peasant Song. The variations were composed by Koharu Sakiyama, Kara Taylor, Haladar Wright, Jackson Grace and Johann Mohnen. These young composers treat the audience to flights of imagination, turning Peasant Song into a tango, a depiction of fire and wind, a jazz tune, and a rollicking circus-like romp. Vivaldi Strings will also premiere Amir Avsker’s Divertimento No. 2.

The virtual concert also includes the world premiere of award-winning composer and MYS conductor, Giancarlo Castro D’Addona’s Portland Beauty, performed by Symphony Orchestra. The piece was inspired by Giancarlo’s first hike to Mirror Lake, a trek marked by sunshine, rain, and snow. Portland Beauty was commissioned by Portland State University professor, Dr. Óscar Fernández and funded by grantor Bringing Theory to Practice to further “Race and Social Justice Dialogues focusing on immigration, art, and activism.”

The evening closes with multiple MYS ensembles performing selections of Georges Bizet’s colorful and flamboyant Carmen Suite No. 1 and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 8.
