Theory & Beginning Music Classes
This optional class encourages players to build upon their instrumental performance skills by learning more about the building blocks of music. Topics can include learning about clefs and key signatures, understanding intervals and chords structures, aural skills, and much more! Students will take an evaluation on their first day of class to assess their level. Beginning & intermediate/advanced classes are typically offered based on the student’s level of knowledge. “My daughter gained confidence as she worked through learning to read music. She loves music and has really grown to enjoy playing her viola. We are looking forward to next year.“
MYS only requires one year of experience to join an ensemble. However, with a firm belief that all children should have access to music, MYS created the tuition-free Beginning Strings program during the 2013-14 season for qualifying elementary aged students to gain that one year of experience. We now host classes at Lincoln Street Elementary in Hillsboro and at Roseway Heights School in Portland. For questions and to register for our Portland classes, please contact our Production Manager, Chris Whittemore.
