Music Classes

Theory & Beginning Music Classes

Deeper musical learning in small group settings! In addition to our 15 ensembles, MYS offers:

Music Theory

This optional class encourages players to build upon their instrumental performance skills by learning more about the building blocks of music. Topics can include learning about clefs and key signatures, understanding intervals and chords structures, aural skills, and much more! Students will take an evaluation on their first day of class to assess their level. Beginning & intermediate/advanced classes are typically offered based on the student’s level of knowledge. For questions about Music Theory, please contact our Artistic Operations Team.

  • $85 for the year
  • Saturdays from 11:35 am-12:20 pm, and 12:45 pm-1:30 pm
  • Music Theory is currently only offered at our Portland location at Roseway Heights School

Beginning Strings

My daughter gained confidence as she worked through learning to read music. She loves music and has really grown to enjoy playing her viola. We are looking forward to next year.

MYS only requires one year of experience to join an ensemble. However, in the firm belief that all children should have access to music, MYS created the tuition-free Beginning Strings program for qualifying elementary aged students to gain that one year of experience.  This class is most appropriate for students in 2nd-5th grade, however 1st graders who are reading successfully are also welcome to apply. To register for our Roseway Heights Beginning Strings classes, please see below.
