A Night to Remember

Yo-Yo Ma and the MYSfits

MYS's premier string ensemble, the MYSfits, was invited by the Oregon Symphony to provide pre-concert entertainment at the Schnitzer Concert Hall prior to Yo-Yo Ma’s Portland recital.

As the students played, the music enticed Yo-Yo Ma to the lobby! He borrowed a cello and sat in with our musicians then without realizing it, 15 of our students suddenly became chamber partners with one of the greatest musicians of our time.

After finding out that the MYSfits did not have tickets to attend his sold out recital, Yo-Yo arranged to have 17 chairs set up on either side of him ON STAGE, and our students were treated to an intimate chamber music experience the likes of which they will never forget.

As Mr. Ma sat to perform his encore, he announced: "Let me be absolutely clear, I am the MYSfit on this stage."

We extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to Yo-Yo Ma and the Oregon Symphony, for an experience that we will treasure for the rest of our lives!

"What an amazing night. Yo-Yo Ma is one of the most charismatic and entertaining people, not to mention one of the absolute best musicians, that I may ever have the pleasure of meeting in my life. Getting to sit up on stage with him while he performed was so surreal and awesome. He'd often look over to smile and wink at us as he played, and he was so fun to watch... I am a spectacularly lucky person and I'm so happy I got this opportunity. Again: Wow" - Xander, MYSfit Violist

MYS Partnership with Portland Summer Ensembles

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with Portland Summer Ensembles (PSE) as PSE joins operations with MYS.

Portland Summer Ensembles

Now in its seventh year, PSE is a one-week chamber music workshop for young musicians for strings (including bass), piano and percussion.  Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jun Iwasaki, current concertmaster of the Nashville Symphony and the Oregon Symphony’s concertmaster from 2007-2011, and with faculty from the Oregon Symphony and area universities, this year’s camp is scheduled for July 18-23, 2016. The application process for this camp is now closed.  Thank you to all of you who have applied and will be joining us this summer.  We look forward to an amazing camp!  For more information go to portlandsummerensembles.org.

NEW LOGO_Horn OnlyThe mission of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony is to educate, develop and promote young musicians. We enroll nearly 450 youth from 10 counties in the region, ages 5-18, in 12 orchestra, band and jazz ensembles each year. MYS is one of the largest youth music organizations in the country and one of the few offering a jazz program. Students need only one year of experience to join, and none are turned away due to financial circumstances beyond their control. Learn More about MYS >>
