Percussion Studio

MYS offers a Percussion Studio program which has been designed to maximize the opportunities, coaching, and development for our percussionists. The MYS percussion schedule differs a bit from our standard ensemble rehearsal schedule. MYS Percussionists have a unique opportunity to support a variety of ensembles during a concert term. All percussionists will be assigned to a home ensemble, but they are also divided into 2 percussion teams, a Saturday rehearsal team and a Sunday rehearsal team. Saturday percussionists will play with one or two of the following ensembles: Interlude Orchestra, Sinfonietta Orchestra, and Concert Orchestra. Sunday percussionists play with Symphony Orchestra and MYSticks Percussion Ensemble. MYSticks is MYS’ advanced percussion ensemble.

MYS Percussionists also receive coaching from our Director of Percussion, Kevin Scholssman, most rehearsal weeks. During coaching weeks, our percussionists will meet together as a Percussion Studio and will join their main orchestra rehearsal for the balance of the rehearsal time, which may occur before or after Percussion Studio depending on the ensemble. Percussion Studio will include technique for different orchestral percussion instruments, care and maintenance of instruments, orchestral excerpts, orchestral and band etiquette, and any other relevant topics.

Currently enrolled musicians can find weekly percussion rehearsal schedules and part assignments posted on the MYS website in the Percussion Corner. It is also an expectation that MYS percussionists arrive to rehearsals 30 minutes early. This will allow enough time to set up the required percussion instruments planned for rehearsal.

One year of experience required. Fill out the Registration Form to get started. Audition information can be found here.
