Dear Concert Orchestra,

Only one more rehearsal before our winter break. Don’t forget to stay later after rehearsal for our Holiday Cookie Exchange and Play-Along with Symphony Orchestra, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Please see below for more details about this event. Also, please note that we will start work on the 4th movement of the Mozart Symphony (!!!). Please practice at home before rehearsal. Recap – December 14, 2025

  • We had sectionals with Kevin Lefohn (strings) and Adam Eccleston (woodwinds) on the Mozart symphony.
  • We spent most of the tutti portion of rehearsal reading through the Cartoon Music by YCP composers. Thank you so much for your written feedback to the composers on the parts. I will let you know when we receive the final PDF materials and we will make them available digitally, for you to practice over the winter break.
  • We also spent a little bit of time on the Mozart symphony towards the end of rehearsal.

  • 3:00pm-3:15pm: break
  • 3:15pm-4:15pm: (tutti) Mozart Symphony, Movement 4 (!!!) – we’ll focus on the exposition section of this movement (beginning to m. 124)
  • 4:30pm-6:00pm: Holiday Cookie Exchange and Play-Along

  • Bring your own beverage (like hot cocoa, apple cider, etc). If you feel like bringing a big jug to share, please also bring small disposable cups.
  • If you’re able, please also bring a few paper plates and paper towels for yourself and to share.
  • Wear your favorite holiday attire (“ugly” holiday sweaters encouraged).

We will bring sheet music of holiday favorites, which we will play together with Symphony Orchestra musicians.

Recap – December 14, 2025

  • First half of rehearsal: Woodwind sections worked with coaches, brass with Mr. Eccleston and strings with me (all on the 1st movement of Tchaikovsky).
    • We covered quite a lot of ground with the strings. We did pretty detailed work from m. 86 to the end of the movement, and we played through once (under tempo) from letter B. to m. 86.
  • Tutti rehearsal: we read the YCP piece for this term (by James Lee) and the first movement of the Reinecke Flute Concerto.
  • If you were not at rehearsal on Sunday, please make sure to practice what you missed at home.

VIDEO/AUDIO REFERENCE PLAYLIST” (button on sidebar) and listen to the playlist constantly as part of your preparation. Also, don’t limit yourself to only the recordings included in the playlist (of Tchaikovsky and Reinecke.) Branch out and listen to as many other versions as you can. You might find your very own favorite.

CONCERT Orchestra Notes for December 14, 2025

Hi all,

Thanks for a productive rehearsal on 12/7. I’m excited about how the Mozart symphony is coming along. Keep up the good work practicing at home. I think this will be a very satisfying performance in late February.

We’ve received materials from the Young Composers Project, so we’ll plan to read the Cartoon Music this Sunday (12/14). This and more details below.

Recap – December 7, 2025

  • We had sectionals with Sam Ross (strings) and Adam Eccleston (woodwinds) on the Mozart symphony.
  • The tutti portion of rehearsal focused on slow, detailed work on the development section of the 1st movement of the symphony, as well as the transition within the recapitulation (m. 191 to 210). We spent about 7 minutes on Jupiter.

That was a very satisfying rehearsal on 12/7. Thanks for your preparation and hard work on the 3rd movement of the Tchaikovsky Symphony.

Coming up on 12/14, we’ll have an all-star lineup of Oregon Symphony musicians coaching each woodwind section. Brass will work with Mr. Eccleston. Strings will be with me.   • Detailed work on the exposition of the movement, some work on the recapitulation, and detailed work on the coda. We didn’t cover the development.

SYMPHONY Orchestra Notes for November 23, 2025

Hi all,

Great to see you on Sunday 11/16. I enjoyed reading just about half of the Tchaikovsky symphony with you.

Congrats to MYSfits and our Jazz Ensembles for fantastic performances at the Community Concert. Really great work. I thought all groups sounded wonderfully.

Also, thank you for taking time to answer my post-concert debriefing questionnaire. I will spend time this week reading every single one of your answers. This will help me continue shaping your MYS experience to be the best it can be. More about this on Sunday.

String Players: represent MYS at this Oregon Chorale program

A couple of spots still available!

Represent MYS in a couple of performances with the Oregon Chorale in December: the Oregon Chorale will be the choir joining MYS Symphony Orchestra in June 2026 for our performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and we are thrilled to collaborate with them.

CONCERT Orchestra Notes for November 23, 2025

Hi all,

Thank you for your work with Mr. Todd on Sunday. I look forward to seeing you again this coming Sunday (11/23), to dig into the Mozart Symphony.

Also, thank you for taking time to answer my post-concert debriefing questionnaire. I will spend time this week reading every single one of your answers. This will help me continue shaping your MYS experience to be the best it can be. More about this on Sunday.

Recap – November 16, 2025

  • The first portion of rehearsal was spent on our post-concert debriefing questionnaire. If you were not present on Sunday, you can still fill it out here.
  • Mr. Todd led our first read-through of the Mozart Symphony.

Rehearsal Plan for Sunday, November 23, 2025

Please arrive by 1:45pm. We can always use extra hands to help set up the room if you are able to get there closer to 1:30pm. I will arrive at 1:30pm to open the space.

  • Arrival: 1:45pm – EVERYBODY SIGN IN IN CAFETERIA.
  • 2:00pm-3:30pm: Mozart, Symphony No. 40, movement 1 – Detailed work on the exposition section of the first movement (beginning to m. 100).
  • 3:30pm-3:45pm: break
  • 3:45pm-4:30pm: more Mozart
  • 4:30pm-5:00pm: Holst Jupiter – beginning to #5

String Players: join Symphony players for this Oregon Chorale program

A couple of spots still available!

Represent MYS in a couple of performances with the Oregon Chorale in December: the Oregon Chorale will be the choir joining MYS Symphony Orchestra in June 2026 for our performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and we are thrilled to collaborate with them.

They are looking for a small string ensemble to join them for their holiday concerts. Please click here for details and to sign up.


MYS CONCERT Part Assignments, Orchestra Schedule, Repertoire, Audio Reference, etc…

Keep in mind that this term we will also play a piece by the Young Composers Project. I’ll create a different seating rotation for this piece as soon as I receive it from the composers. I expect we’ll get the materials the first week of December.

I’ve updated our YouTube playlist with a live performance of the Mozart symphony by the London Mozart Players. Click the button on the sidebar (or bottom of the page if on mobile). I’ll keep adding videos in the next couple of weeks.

Availability for private lessons

I don’t take long-term regular private students, but this season I will have some availability on Monday afternoons for “one-off” violin, viola or conducting lessons. The lessons can be in person at my home studio in SE Portland, or via Zoom. (I may also be available for private coaching sessions for other instruments, but my specific instrumental training is upper strings.) Shoot me an e-mail if you’re interested for more details.
